The Comic Book Series of the Year!
In October, 2012 a comic book series that has had fans talking for more than a year will return.
The Legend of Oz: The Wicked West has been a hit since it’s debut in October of 2011. A Diamond Top 300 book for multiple issues. The Wicked West is a western adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and was unlike anything anyone had ever heard of…or conceived. The wild west setting was a perfect mix for the classic Baum story and allowed for a twist that has captured the imaginations of comic book readers and Oz fans alike. Not merely a sexualized, adult version of the story we all know, but a true reimagining complete with a Dorothy Gale that takes no guff and goes through the wilds of Oz looking every inch the tough as nails cowgirl that she is along with her trusty steed, Toto.
Written by Tom Hutchison, the initial 6 issue mini series (which wraps it’s story this August) shows us an Oz that is both familiar and vastly new. And while the story follows the same basic tenants of Baum’s original Oz story, the ending is decidedly different.
Returning with Hutchison, who is writing the first 5 issue story arc of the new series, is artist Alisson Borges and colorist Kate Finnegan. Alisson has grown into this world and these characters and is absolutely making them his own while Kate has magically transformed not only Alisson’s work but also her own in creating colors that bring this story, and these characters to life and making them jump right off the page. Together they are a team that everyone at Big Dog Ink wanted back, and we are lucky to have them. Also returning to the series is cover artist, Nei Ruffino. Her alternate covers have been fan favoristes from the beginning and we are very happy to have her back for more!
Watch for news on the release including order codes and variants that will be available at upcoming comic conventions including the debut at New York Comic Con in October with a cover by the super talented Eric “Ebas” Basaldua just to get us started!

there’s always this version of Oz:

Dorothy: Locked & Loaded
Thanks — we always enjoy seeing other people’s takes on the same source material. A note for our readers, though: the above “Dorothy: Locked and Loaded” link does contain some adult material!
I found a reference to this on deviantart when I did a search for Mombi. This is a series that I will have to search out.
Have you noticed how much Oz creative work is showing up now? I believe that Oz is the next big thing. We’ve had magic boy saves the world (Harry Potter and clones), Vampires (Twilight and others), and now I believe Oz is going to make its mark.
If you are interested, I have a prequel to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz available on Amazon. “The Hidden History of Oz, Book One: The Witch Queens” follows a young Glinda and a young ventriloquist from pre-Civil War Nebraska as they stand against the Wicked Witches for the freedom of Oz.
Good luck with your Oz series. I like the Western genre, and I love the Oz mythology. Blending the two is sure to be a fun ride.
Thanks for stopping by, Tarl! There does seem to have been a big resurgence of interest in Oz these last few years, and we think that’s pretty exciting. It’s always fun seeing different takes on the same source material, so we definitely might have to check out your book. Good luck to you as well, and we’ll hope to see you somewhere along the yellow brick road!
[...] I gave up on it halfway through. I was likewise confused, though more intrigued, by Big Dog Ink’s The Legend of Oz: The Wicked West #1, which turned out to be a continuation of a previous re-imagination of Frank L. Baum’s classic [...]
